3rd Prize – Vietnamese Handwritten Recognition

Naver × SoICT Hackathon 2023

“Vietnamese handwriting is brutal — diacritics, ligatures, every writer's quirks. Top-3 felt like a small victory against entropy.”

## Missions

  1. 01

Placed 3rd in the Naver Vietnamese Handwritten Recognition track at the SoICT Hackathon 2023.

  2. 02

Designed a recognition pipeline tuned for the heavy diacritics and stylistic variance unique to handwritten Vietnamese.

Field notes

Placing 3rd in the Naver Vietnamese Handwritten Recognition track sounds modest until you understand the problem: Vietnamese diacritics stack up to three marks on a single base character, and every writer invents their own shorthand for them. The overnight calibration runs — iterating augmentation pipelines while the fluorescent lights of the Hanoi University lab buzzed overhead — taught me that the gap between 94% and 98% accuracy is where real OCR engineering lives. That competition is still the mental model I reach for every time I encounter a noisy, low-resource recognition task at GMO.

Onsite at the SoICT Hackathon 2023 final round (Hanoi University of Science and Technology). The Naver track was the longest, fluorescent kind of night — espresso cups, half a dozen GPUs, and Vietnamese diacritics that absolutely refused to behave.
